  4. Country Description:  Brunei is a small Islamic Sultanate on the north coast
  5. of the island of Borneo. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is the only major
  6. city.  Tourist facilities are good, and generally available.
  7.  
  8. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  Visas are not required for
  9. Americans traveling to Brunei for business or pleasure on a designated
  10. carrier for stays of less than 90 days.  Travelers on official business
  11. continue to need visas, which must be obtained in advance.  A yellow fever
  12. vaccination is needed if arriving from an infected area.  For more current

  17. Medical Facilities:  Hospital and medical services in Brunei are available,
  18. with adequate facilities.  Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash
  19. payment for health services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid
  20. outside the United States.  Supplemental medical insurance with specific
  21. overseas coverage has proven useful.  The international traveler's hotline
  22. at the Centers for Disease Control can be reached at (404) 332-4559 for
  23. additional useful health information.

  25. Information on Crime:  The crime rate in Brunei is very low, and violent
  26. crime is rare.  Lost or stolen passports should be reported to the local
  27. police and the U.S. Embassy.  Useful information on guarding valuables and
  28. protecting personal security while traveling abroad is provided in the
  29. Department of State pamphlet, "A Safe Trip Abroad."  It is available from
  30. the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office,
  31. Washington, D.C. 20402.

  33. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  34. the country in which they travel.  The trafficking in and the illegal
  35. importation of controlled drugs are very serious offenses in Brunei and the
  36. penalty for such offenses is death.  Persons carrying amounts above
  37. specified minimum quantities (15 grams of heroin, etc.) are subject to the
  38. maximum penalty.

  40. Registration:  Americans who register at the U.S. Embassy can obtain updated
  41. information on travel and security within the area.
